The scenic Tauranga harbour is over 20kms in length and containes many isands, inlets, backwaters and beaches to explore. The majestic Mount Maunganui (Mauao) stands over the eastern, Tauranga entrance. Matakana island extends the entire length of the harbour on the seaward side from Mount Maunganui at the eastern entrance at the Bowentown and Waihi Beach entrance at the western end.
There is a busy commercial port in the harbour (Port of Tauranga) and in season cruise ships will be in port as well as large container vessels and timber transporting vessels.
